BMW Welt

New architectural symbol of the BMW brand is being devised at an important location in the city of Munich, between the BMW Building and the Olympic Complex, named The BMW Welt or ‘World’ in english. The BMW Group selected Coop Himmelblau with their project in an international competition back in year 2001 for the new BMW Event and Delivery Center. For Prof. Wolf D. Prix and Helmut Swiczinsky it’s a dream and at the same time a challenge to have their own vision realized in the neighborhood of two architectural icons of the 20th Century. Under Bavarian skies, the project described as an impressive 21st century landscape of clouds.

Arteplage Biel

Expo 02 is the 6th Swiss national exhibition, which was held from May 15 to October 20, 2002. It divided into five sites, which were called arteplages, due to the proximity of the water (some sites were actually partially or even totally built on the water). With 38 exhibitions, they were located in Neuchâtel (pebbles), Yverdon-les-Bains (cloud), Morat/Murten (monolith), Biel/Bienne (towers) and on a boat traveling from one site to another, for the canton of Jura, which does not have access to any one of the three lakes.

Gasometer B

When four ex-industrial gas tanks in Vienna became useless, they left huge masonry shells behind. Placed in the 11th district Simmering, they were functioned from 1899 to 1984. After the changeover from town gas to natural gas in 1969–1978, they were no longer used and were shut down. Only the brick exterior front walls were remained. In 1995 it was decided to utilize these structures for residential purposes, four planners brought forward their proposals in conjunction with known architects. The invited architects Jean Nouvel (Gasometer A), Coop Himmelblau (Gasometer B), Manfred Wehdorn (Gasometer C), and Wilhelm Holzbauer (Gasometer D) were completed between 1999 and 2001.

Groninger Museum

The most interesting building in Groningen is the Groninger Museum, north of the Netherlands with its cacophony of colors and shapes. Surrounded by water, it resembles a sea-going vessel which accidentally boarded in the city canal. Its popularity is likely the museum itself than the collections because it is a work of art in itself. Designed by the Italian Alessandro Mendini, it collaborates with guest architects were invited to design sections, pavilions, of the new Museum: the Italian designer Michele de Lucchi, Philippe Starck from Paris, and Coop Himmelblau. They were challenged to create diverse atmospheres, and the answer is a museum interior which is well adapted to the different kinds of material exhibited.

Akron Art Museum

Scheduled to open July 15 2007, the museum’s new building designed by Austrian architecture firm of Coop Himmelblau will place adjacent to the museum’s 1899 building. Gallery space will rise from 8,000 to about 21,000 square feet, also count offices, classrooms, a cafe and a gift shop. At this time, less than 1% of the museum’s permanent collection can be shown at a time, and many traveling exhibitions cannot be shown at all because of the low ceilings in the traveling exhibition galleries.
